Webinar on “The 10th Year of Arab Spring”

 

The Department of Political Science, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Near East University organized a Webinar on “The 10th Year of Arab Revolts: Actors, Expectations and New Horizons”.

Prof. Dr. Meliha Benli Altunışık and Prof. Dr. Özlem Tür from the Department of International Relations at the Middle East Technical University (METU-Ankara) and Head of the Department of Political Science at Near East University Assoc. Prof. Dr.  Nur Köprülü took place in the panel as the speakers and addressed and highlighted how the politics in the Middle East region was restructured since 2011 Arab Uprisings. The popular protests, which started first in Tunisia in December 2010 then quickly spread to the Arab world entirely and had a wide repercussions in Egypt, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Jordan and Morocco.

Within this context, the new power distribution and emerging blocks that emerged in the region in the past 10 years and the implications of the ongoing civil war and conflict in Syria on the region as well as neighbouring country Lebanon were discussed. In addition, the US foreign policy towards the Middle East and how the new Biden Administration will approach the region was also addressed. At the end of the panel, it was stated that the popular demands for democratization in the region are still alive and the Arab Spring is not yet over.
